The company Packages Ltd was formed in1957 and over the years progressed rapidly by indulging into vertical and backward integration and establishing various successful joint ventures. By 2009, it became the largest packaging company in Pakistan with manpower of 3000 employees. This case study under examination describes and discusses the issues faced by Rizwan Ghani, the Business Unit Manager Carton. The company after expanding its operations and forming various business units central to the functioning of the organization came across certain economic and cultural challenges. Business Unit Carton was the foremost business unit of the company and had a number of imperative lines that brought major revenue to the company. By the end of 90's and during 2000, the interest and capital costs declined which helped smaller players in the market to buy quality raw materials at a low price and were thereby able to invest in new hardware and brand new technology. This lead to an increase in the competition faced by Packages and they started facing losses by losing their competitive edge because of high structural costs. Packages had to introduce a change of ways to improve efficiency, effectiveness and profits. The process was initiated by Rizwan with the help of core team. After facing resistance and after sensible inculcation of the change process the new procedures were implemented. Employees were provided with training and were taught cost effective ways of operating machines. In addition, the reward and appraisal system were revised and revamped. The major challenges faced by organization include sustainability of the change achieved so far and institutionalization of the new culture introduced in the organization.
