With a common & unified mandate rooted in awareness on health to create sustainable societal impact, LUMS partnered with Pink Ribbon-Pakistan, Cancer Care Hospital & Research Center, and Dr. Essa Laboratory to organize a mega & multi-faceted event titled “#PinkTogether: A Breast Cancer Awareness Event”.

Held on October 27, 2023, the event was a collaborative effort, from LUMS, between Centre for Business & Society, Human Resources, Campus Health and LUMS Community Service Society (LCSS). The event had multiple segments with an overarching goal of educating the community on breast cancer, destigmatizing the conversation through awareness and initiating health incentives for the female community at LUMS, by providing free mammography.

The event day included an all-day medical camp at discounted rates, at the LUMS Medical Centre. The main event was kicked off by the co-hosts; HR-LUMS & CBS-LUMS.  The first segment featured a panel session which included expert representatives from the field of surgery and oncology, psychology, and philanthropy. The panel partners included Pink Ribbon-Pakistan and IMC Hospital.  The panel was curated to allow for a holistic conversation regarding the symptoms & treatment of breast cancer, championing the survivors and, the responsibilities and psychological impact on the caretakers of people battling breast cancer.

Following the conclusion of the panel session, the female audience of the event was given a self-check tutorial led by a breast cancer surgeon. The objective was to educate the audience to carry out self-checks on their own at home, to be aware and to eliminate risks associated with late detection.

The final segment of the event day was the much-anticipated awareness walk which was led by the students of LCSS. Pink posters with motivating phrases and slogans, championing the theme of the event, filled the campus horizons as the students, event partners, faculty & staff members walked throughout the premises raising awareness on breast cancer.

Owing to its institutional significance, such efforts rooted in pertinent issues in Pakistan, are essential & key towards creating a change among the masses.
