CBS, LUMS under its mandate to create sustainable and constructive societal impact rooted in awareness for the masses, organised an event to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 2022. The multifaceted event was organised in partnership with Pink Ribbon Pakistan (Non-Profit Organisation) and held on October 21, 2022. The event titled “Pinktober: A Talk and a Walk for a Cause” had two activities: a panel talk on breast cancer and its awareness in Pakistan and a group walk across the LUMS campus. The attendees wore pink and white in honour of the theme.
The panel talk event was opened by Dr. Alnoor Bhimani (Honorary Dean, SDSB LUMS) and featured expert panelists from the domains of medicine, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. The discussion ranged from the lack of education of breast cancer in Pakistan, its symptoms and timely treatment and the critical measures necessary to curb the case fatality rate of breast cancer. Currently over 90,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Pakistan each year and about 40,000 of them are in their terminal stages. The crucial conversation also touched upon the psychological impacts of the cancer and the initiatives being taken across the country to mitigate this risk and fund the treatment including rehabilitation of the breast cancer survivors.
The group walk featured the attendees assembling outside the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB, LUMS) building carrying pledges and wearing pink ribbons. The walk took place around the SDSB building with the participants chanting the awareness slogans.
The SDSB, LUMS building was illuminated in pink to commemorate PINKtober to highlight the importance of unity and vow to not only take individual steps but also as a community.
